SMART Goal Setting – What Is It?

SMART goal is a great tool that helps making sure the objectives and aims desired are achievable as well as trackable with tangible data. When a goal is written down and tracked you will be ahead of the game and more likely able to make your dreams come true.

In health & wellness and professional life SMART goal setting is one of the most empowering and effective tool but yet not used as much as it should. Using this tool will clearly support your vision, your clarity and provide you with transparency about yourself as well as light bulb moments.

In a nutshell, this process will increase your Awareness, Self-Discovery and your Success further…

SMART Goal Setting – Meaning

To set goals (personal or professional) for yourself and for them to be considered SMART they have to include the following criteria: Specific, Measurable, Agreeable, Realistic, Time-based.

Let’s now dive into each section of the SMART goal setting tool so you can understand and apply these for optimal success.

SMART Goal Setting – Specific

The more specific/precise you are about what is it you want to achieve (Be, Have, Do) the more likely you are going to fit within the SMART model and the better you will feel as you will have a clear picture of the “WHAT” section.

Here are some (Health & Wellness and Professional) example of questions I ask myself to fill this part:

Health & Wellness:

  • What is the ideal weight that I want to be?
  • What size of clothes do I want to wear?
  • How many times weekly will I work-out?
  • Why exactly do I want to achieve this goal?

Professional:

  • How much money do I want to make monthly?
  • How many hours do I want to work on my project weekly?
  • What are the type of clients/business partners I want to attract?
  • Why exactly do I want to achieve this goal?

By answering these type of questions it already creates more clarity and and tangible ideas of what you want to create for yourself.

SMART Goal Setting – Measurable

A goal which is measurable means that you have a point of reference to be able to track your progress.

Here a few examples:

For a Health & Wellness goal I tend to monitor my progress with clothes size for example, so keeping one specific piece of clothing to refer to is ideal. Another great tool to use (even if not feeling comfortable with it) is to take a before and after picture as this will show the figure rather than just focusing on the weight when using only a scale.

The Composition of the body is as important, if not more, as the actual weight that the scale shows.

If my business goal is to help 150 new clients in 1 year then I break the goal down per month then per day. And each day, I write in my diary how many people I managed to help work towards their goals. So at the end of each month and the end of the year I can count the total and figure out if the goal was reached.

SMART Goal Setting – Agreeable

Now that we know specifically what we want to achieve and how we can track our progress it is time to agree on what was set. How can you do this?

You can do this by finding an accountable partner, a friend to report to or even a coach. My clients most of the time say that this is the part they Love because it is very helpful to keep you on your toes and wanting to make you achieve what you set yourself to do.

“The American Society of Training and Development found that people are 65 percent likely to meet a goal after committing to another person. Their chances of success increase to 95 percent when they build in ongoing meetings with their partners to check in on their progress.”

The simple reason I found this is working great is that we (human being) don’t like to disappoint or feel like a failure. Right?

SMART Goal Setting – Realistic

Having a Realistic SMART goal setting is asking whether it is congruent with the expectation you are expressing.

For example If I say “I’m going to start working-out from tomorrow because I would love to participate in a body building competition next week” then let’s face the fact that I’m already setting myself for failure or I am in denial.

Same thing if I plan on coaching 300 people using the SMART Goal Setting model but only market my business to reach out to 1 person per week then it does not reflect the so called desired goal. Will there be results? Sure! Would it be near the wanted outcome? Nope! And would this lack of congruency action create frustration? ABSOLUTELY!!!

So, being realistic means knowing where you are today on your journey (ie: Weigh showing on the scale, What clothe size you are wearing, how much money you are generating, how many people you are setting meeting with…) and where you want to be (ie: weigh or clothe size you want to achieve, how much money you want your business to make, how many new clients or business partner you want to attract within a certain period of time…).

Once you have the knowledge of where you are and where you want to be then you just need to compare if the actions planned to be taken in between are making it realistic to go from point A to point B.

SMART Goal Setting – Time-based

When a goal is attached to a deadline the person who wants to achieve that goal is more likely going to take action sooner rather than later.

To make your SMART goal Time-based you just need to decide when you want to start the process towards achieving your outcome and when you want it to be achieved by. Just make also sure that this time frame is realistic with where you are today and where you want to be as explained “Realistic” section.

Although it very important to have these dates in place, it is equally important not to focus only on the deadline and to let some flexibility around it. Otherwise it might get too overwhelming and generate bad/unnecessary stress.

For example when I decided to build this platform to provide you with valuable content (which hopefully is the case 🙂 ) I set myself a launching date and actually it happens 1 month later or so. Yet, because I decided to be flexible and not even listen too much of the external opinion as my plan was clear then the whole process was rather enjoyable.

SMART Goal Setting – In Conclusion

Goal setting is what successful people do and to do so they use tool to be able to track their progress.

So here is a recap for you to remember the key important part you’ll need to et yourself for success:

Specific: Make you desired outcome so clear that even a 3 year old could actually know how to articulate your mission. To help the process you might remember to ask yourself question such as: Where, How, What…

Measurable: To be able track your progress you need a reference point. ie: piece of clothing, weight on scale… This way you can compare when there is a change.

Agreeable: Having someone to refer to and keep you accountable will increase your chances of achieving your SMART goal so find a friend, colleague, coach, gym-buddy, business partner… and agree on times you can connect to reflect and review if needed.

Realistic: If you want better results and avoid disappointment check that your goal is achievable in the time frame that you set yourself to achieve it. ie: Loosing 30Kg in 1 week would not be realistic neither healthy or possible. Equally wanting to generate a 1M pounds, dollars, euros or whatever currency in one day is pretty impossible.

Time-based: A starting date and a deadline will be necessary to figure out if you are on track and also will serve you in taking action.
