Prospecting vs Marketing – What’s the best for generating leads –
There is no right or wrong about what technique to use to build your business, but it definitely matters to know what it is that suits your personality, your style and your gut.
You probably met people that are in business and, even though they say all is great, they are actually struggling to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
Not necessarily regarding the amount of sales they are making but specifically how much fun do they really have running their business without feeling exhausted or limited.
Let me tell you that this above description was me after a few years in my first business venture and I was feeling like you can see on the left picture. I had this feeling of having a “prospecting helmet/radar” every-time I’d step ouf of my house.
Fast forward 6 years later, I decided to listen to my intuition and the fun began. In this Episode 20 of Thierry V Alexandre I will share with you the main differences between Prospecting vs Marketing.

Prospecting vs Marketing – The Difference
Again, there is no right or wrong here just differences between the two which are vital to consider if you want to have fun building your business in the way that works for you.
Simply put. Prospecting is when you goes out there to actively look for people to talk to hoping that those people might be interested in what you have to offer, whereas Marketing is when you put something out there that you hope some of those unnamed individuals will come to you to know more about what you are offering and/or doing.
Like in everything there are, of course, some Pro’s and Con’s. Let’s go through some of them now.
Prospecting vs Marketing – Con’s
Prospecting:
- Has a low leverage since it is often on a 1-1 basis, or a group which still has a limited amount of people that can be invited
- Little automation as you have to physically be present for the process to happen
- Very time consuming (same reason as above)
- Spend lots of money on coffee meetings which is a tax right off but still an expense that can cost a lot over time when prospects don’t turn up
Marketing:
- Has less control over who will opt-in for your offer and whether they are interested or not
- Gotta make sure to keep a social life and not staying behind your screen only
- No immediate answer
Prospecting vs Marketing – Pro’s
Prospecting:
- Fast in terms of getting from start to finish once you are facing the prospect
- Gives you an instant Yes/No answer
- Can maybe sense a little better the person’s energy and personality when face to face
Marketing:
- Provides more leverage as you can literally reach the ENTIRE world at once
- You can Automate your systems
- Create the piece one time and does the work for you over and over (Blog, videos…) even while you sleep
- More easily duplicable
Prospecting vs Marketing – Best Option
I’ll be honest, after so many years using the “Prospecting” strategy, I personally prefer Marketing because I find it more fun and limitless. But I would equally be genuine saying that I haven’t stop prospecting completely, although it is not my focus at all when going out of my house. I used to always try and find a way to start a conversation at the grocery store, at the restaurant, in the public transport (in fact I was called “Amigo del Buso” which means “The bus friend”!!! And these are only just a few places where I was talking to people with an agenda in mind. In the end it exhausted me.
Now I just make friends with people and if, somehow, our conversation goes into business or something which is link to my service or product and that it can serve, then of course I will invite the person to take a look at what I have.
Prospecting vs Marketing – In Closing
Neither of these strategies are right or wrong to implement in your business. it really depends on what type of personality that you have and if it fits your business model or not.
All I would recommend is to be curious and investigate in both areas so you know which one to use for yourself. And who knows, you might find a balance using both strategies which also a great thing to do as it brings variety and shows your audience that you can coach on either or.
