Prospecting Tips – Starting point

Essentially, prospecting starts with knowing how to communicate effectively so people will take you seriously, and see you as a professional rather than a spammer.

Yet, it does not have to be complicated and just requires a little attention to details, for it to become second nature with practice.

Prospecting Tips – Actively connect

One of the common mistake that marketers make on social media is that they put a post up believing that people are immediately going to reach out, asking about their products, service, and opportunity.

This is true for leaders who have created a strong credibility and relationship with their audience, yet not so much when just starting in the game.

Eve though it is easier than in person, it still definitely takes work to build a business online. So be active at engaging, posting value on your timeline as well as in groups, and make new connections daily.

Prospecting Tips – Be a human first

Another common mistake people tend to make is to ask THE question too clumsily. What I mean by this is that they don’t take the time to make the other person feel acknowledge.

People will always appreciate when you are interested in them rather than trying to be interesting yourself.

People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care

Typically speaking, I would send a message immediately along any friend request and say something like:

“Hey (Name), Nice connecting with you inside the (Group name). I like that/agree with/relate to (continue where you left it off in the group or include something that you genuinely liked from their profile). It seems like you (include something from their profile you want to continue the conversation with)? I have/am/do (include your own response)

People will love that you are truly communicating and also sharing about you, therefore it will open them up even more.

Prospecting Tips – Transition

However, another mistake that many makes, which I definitely made for a very long time, is to wait too long to ask people if they’re open to taking a look into my product, service, opportunity.

Is there anything such as being too quick though?

Well, it really depends on your approach. Again, people love when they have someone who is spilling the “T” sooner rather than later.

So, after a few backs and forth messages I typically send this type of message:
“The reason for connecting with you is because (insert a genuine compliment) and I would love to share a project with you that I’m working on, and was wondering if you’re at all open to take a look into it if it does not interfere with all that you are already doing. Let me know if you’re open to take a look and I’ll send you some info. If not no biggy!”

Now, you are talking business, my friend. It is up to them to decide but noticed that they are some intentional and psychological aspect in this above paragraph. Such as “if you are open…”, “Let me know if you’re open” and “If not no biggy”.

First, it is very rare that someone will say “no I’m not open” and “if not no biggy” makes them feel at ease rather than under pressure of having to say “yes”.

Prospecting Tips – Conclusion

It all starts with the way you position yourself in front of your prospect and how you approach the conversation. Just a few tweaks and some practice will definitely make you feel comfortable about the process, then it will become natural.
