There are a lot of different opinion about what is and what isn’t Network Marketing. Some have a definition of Network Marketing which does not reflect what it exactly is.
Understandably, some people get also confuse because of the words themselves “Network” and “Marketing”. In fact, if these two words are taken separately they each have a definition, which have a meaning and if put together can well have a different meaning.

In this Episode #11 I’m going to share with you what Network Marketing isn’t and what it is. You will then be able to share this info with your people, and use it to your advantage to have more leverage. Additionally, it will create a third part opinion outside yourself.

Network Marketing – Opinion
The industry of Network Marketing has some good and not so good reputation attached to it. Unfortunately, the behaviour and the business approach of some people can push others away from what this opportunity can offer.
Some people will have “Ideas” of what Network Marketing (also known as MLM) is and make assumption on the basis of what goes around which, let’s face it, all information we have access to these days is necessarily the truth. Hence why it is very important to self educate ourselves.
Whether you are here because you want to know more about this industry, or you already are within the industry and you need tools to explain to your people about it, you are in the right place.
Let’s now dive in what Network Marketing is and What it is not.
Network Marketing – SCAM
As mentioned above, this industry has bad and good reputations. The bad reputation such as, this is a scam comes from some historic events that happened within this field. And in all fairness, it is totally justified that people are very hesitant or skeptical. Always good to protect thyself but best to be well informed.
Yes, there has been cases of people who created their business under the entity of Network Marketing or MLM systems and actually screwed lots of people, by closing down after making money off of them. Some others were saying that the way to make money was only by recruiting other people, which is obviously illegal.
Unfortunately, bad people are everywhere, in any type of business as well as any field you can imagine of. We just need to be aware, careful and informed properly.
According to a report from the World Federation Of Direct Selling Association, this industry count over 107 Million people involved who are building a business by representing a product or service from a brand (Resource Here). Most likely, you have been approached, might have someone in your surrounding who is involved or you might already be involved yourself. The Network Marketing industry has generated $183.7 Billion in 2015 and $189.6 Billion in 2017 (Just counting profit from companies registered under the DSA), meaning that this industry keeps on growing year after year.
Network Marketing – CULT
In my opinion, this is the best cult I ever came across. Just joking 🙂
Yes, this is something I have heard many many times. Thankfully not in my face directly because who know me know that I am aware of what I do and trust my judgement but many others have had this question asked.
Indeed, it can seem a bit too good to be true as people show a real, maybe unusual, happiness. What is really important to remember is that anyone who gets this industry is understanding their potentials, they feel like they can revive their dreams and get surrounded of likeminded people, who believe in them even when they don’t believe in themselves.
Don’t know about you, but personally I define a cult where people tell others what to do, how to do it and that if they don’t do those things they are not worth it and cannot be part of this “Tribe”. In Network Marketing you can be you, do what you want and the way you want it. In fact, some people feel refreshed compare to other experiences they might have had.
Network Marketing – Get Rich Quick
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but if you are after a Get Rich Quick type of scheme then this industry is definitely not for you, at all! Actually, there is not “Get Rich Quick” business in this world. If that exist, it must be illegal anyway.
So if anyone approached you with any opportunity saying that you can get rich “Tomorrow”, I would suggest you run from that person as fast and far as possible 🙂
However, yes there are few unusual stories of people that managed to create a high income for themselves in Network Marketing. But again, remember that it is very rare that things can happen sort of overnight.
Network Marketing – Vs “Traditional” Business
Most traditional business require lots of money to get started but especially to keep going. Overheads tend to be extremely expensive or even unfordable for most people.
This is where Network Marketing has a great place for people like me, and maybe you, who want to create and build something of their own, be entrepreneurs but don’t have the means and/or knowledge.
Whereas in traditional business it can fantastic for people who can afford it or find the way to make it possible. Others find great advantage to get involved in Network Marketing. This latter has very small or, in some cases, no entry fee, they require no overheads at all which can make the entrepreneur wannabe be relax about the financial aspect. The only aspect that companies require is, that everyone is a consumer of the product or service whichever it might be. Hence why it is best to find a company that has a product or service that you are already using. Therefore it doesn’t become a cost on top of everything else, although you can write it off as a business tax. EVEN better!!

The downfall of not having too much financial involvement means that, many people do not treat this opportunity as a real business. Whereas starting a franchise usually require not less than £10k plus monthly overheads of the business such as utility bills, rent, employees etc
What anyone needs to understand though, is that, time, persistence and self development will be the best commodities you can refer to.
Of course all type of businesses are good to consider but it all depends on the individual’s needs and accessible resources.
Network Marketing – PART 1 Conclusion
- This industry has suffered a few events over the years because of dishonest people. Yet this industry exist since 1939 and has made many people very healthy, wealthy and even out of poverty in some cases
- It can come across as an over exciting crowd of people which understandably, especially with the world we live in today, are happy to see that there are still hopes for their dreams to come true.
- Network Marketing is DEFINITELY not a Get Rich Quick scheme although there are some rare and unusual stories out there. Like any other business it takes time to build
- Relating to the above, time is probably the main best commodity in this business as the fee entry is very small if not inexistent. And without any overhead, apart from being a consumer of the product or service which you usually would consume anyhow, so this becomes a tax write off rather than an entire expense.
